We Love A Wild Classroom!

Our Field & Lab Classes - Aligned with the Science TEKS!

Wetland Ecology

Ecological Design

Wetland Ecology

Wetland Ecology is Popular!

• Wetland Delineation - Students will learn how specialized wetland plants,

saturated soils, and water flow create components of a wetland, and develop skills

in identification of parts of a wetland

• Phytoremediation - Students learn how plants clean the water we use in our homes

• Water Quality - Students will develop field test skills investigating water quality

• Macroinvertebrates - Students will use field equipment to collect

macroinvertebrates & evaluate species.

Wildlife

Wetland Ecology

• Limiting Factors - Students will understand what wildlife need in order to survive in their habitats

• Food Chains/Webs - Students will learn about food chains vs. food webs and the interdependency of species

• Wildlife Observation - Students will observe animal specimens and identify traits and adaptations that enable animals to survive.

Discover the amazing world of wetlands with our "Intro to Wetlands" course, perfect for young nature

Texas Wetland Ecology.

  • Understand the unique characteristics of various Texas wetland types (e.g., coastal marshes, riparian zones, swamps).
  • Learn about the animals and native flora and fauna adapted to these environments.
  • Explore the hydrological processes that shape wetland ecosystems.
  • Understand how to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services through design.

Orinthology

Intro to the Wetlands

Ecological Design

• Blackland Prairie Ecoregion - Students will learn the Blackland Prairie ecoregion and native species.

Anatomy - Students will observe and identify traits and adaptations that enable animals to survive.

• Physiology - Students will understand the important role of birds in their ecosystem

• Behavior - Students will learn about migration &

variations in feeding styles and habitat preference

• Ecology - Students will be able to describe the Central Flyway and understand it's location and relationship to migration.

Intro to the Wetlands

Intro to Wetlands course, perfect for young nature explorers! In this engaging class, children will.

  • Explore Texas's Unique Ecosystems: Dive into the diverse wetland habitats found across Texas, from coastal marshes to inland swamps, learning about the fascinating plants and animals that call them home.
  • Learn About Nature's Importance: Understand why wetlands are crucial for our environment, acting as natural filters, providing homes for wildlife, and protecting us from floods.
  • Engage in Hands-On Learning: Participate in fun activities and experiments that bring wetland science to life, fostering a love for nature and conservation.

Water Conservation

Intro to the Wetlands

Intro to the Wetlands

• Hydrologic Cycle - Students will learn about the water cycle and its connection to weather and climate.

• Threats to Human Water Accessibility - Students will be introduced to sources of drinking water such as lakes, rivers, reservoirs, etc. and investigate factors that threaten water supply.

• Urban Water Cycle - Students will learn about the urban water cycle, especially in relation to the role John Bunker Sands Wetland Center plays in providing water for surrounding communities.

• Conserving Water - Students will learn about and develop solutions for conserving water.
